January 20, 2014 Quiltathon at the UUAC

We had another great quiltathon today. I took an inventory of the quilts in the works before today, so I could track our progress. I haven't counted what I brought home yet, but I know there are at least five finished quilts that people brought in, several tops that people brought to the quiltathon, many tops that were sandwiched, many more tops that were made during the day, two quilts with bindings attached ready to finish, one quilt tied, kits assembled, and more. I am so grateful for the support that this project has received, today and this year, from all the people who have come to work, who have helped promote the project, and the many friends who stop by to see how we are doing. It's a rare treat to be able to spend a whole day together, and to be working together on this worthy cause.

I was busy so I didn't take many pictures, but here are three illustrating excellent work by Carline, Tobi and Margaret. Carline and Tobi are holding quilt tops that they finished today, and Margaret completely finished this child's quilt (in the afternoon, after finishing more than one top in the morning!), which will go to Project Linus, an organization that provides blankets to children in need of comfort.

Columbus Day Quiltathon at the UUAC

We accomplished quite a bit this year at our first quiltathon of the season. Two tops were completely quilted and are ready to be bound, five and 9/10 tops were constructed, four quilts were sandwiched, labels were sewn on several quilts that can now be donated, and fabric was selected and kits were made for the next round of quiltmaking. Best of all we enjoyed a day together and had a great lunch procured by Jill Carroll. I really appreciated getting to know some people that I hadn't had a chance to talk to much before. Thanks for participating, Alice, Rebecca, Beth, Sarah, Jill, Cathie, Margaret, Gloria, Tobi, Polly, Peter and probably a couple of other supportive husbands too, the volunteers that have pledged to continue this work at home, and the rest....Really thinking about it, there are so many more people to thank that I would fail in trying. But special thanks to the church for supporting our project, and all the people who spread the word about the availability of these quilts for people undergoing cancer treatment and other travails, for whom such a humble object as a quilt can be a source of comfort. January Quilt-a-thon at the UUAC in Sherborn

This was my first time leading the quilt-a-thon so I was too busy to take pictures, but I took a few at home of the quilts and tops that we made.

This is a nice and simple but striking top made by Carleen and quilted by yours truly, Cris Crawford. Finished at the quilt-a-thon by Sally Demler.

Next is a beautiful quilt made from a block swap.

This brilliant fabric selection was made by Paxton Roper, a student in the 7th and 8th grade Religious Education class at the UUAC. Pieced by Cris Crawford but not yet quilted.

A beautiful top made by Craig Cohen. Quilted and binded by Cris, and currently on display at church to inspire the quilters among us!

This is the "1200" strip pattern that was very popular at the quilt-a-thon this time. These aren't quilted yet, but shouldn't be too hard to finish. My daughter Cindy chose all pink strips.

Cindy chose all blue strips for this one - four of each color. I sewed all like colors together and ended up with a not-so-scrappy look.

Here is the 1200 quilt with a variation to highlight the blue-green strips that somehow ended up together! Made by Tobi Hoffman.

Many more beautiful tops were made, and many were sandwiched and taken home to be quilted. The next quilt-a-thon at the UUAC will be held on Saturday, March 16th, from 9:00 to 4:00.

Hand Quilting at RNQG Show

Here is a future comfort quilt being hand quilted at the recent RNQG quilt show. The quilt frame was being raffled, and the hand applique top had been donated to the Power of the Quilt for use as a comfort quilt. What a perfect opportunity to showcase hand quilting to the many visitors at the show.

Here are four of the completed quilts from the latest quilt-a-thon held Saturday October 23, 2010 in Sherborn, MA. We had an enthusiastic turnout of people who worked creating quilt tops and quilts for the Power of the Quilt Project.

Starting off the 2010-11 Comfort Quilt Year

Here are 2 quilts that were completed in July, for the 2010-2011 year. With a number of tops carried over from June 2010, where we exceeded our goal of 200 quilts, we are making a good start to our next year, and our new goal of another 200 quilts.

Here are a couple of panels that were donated, backed with flannel, and then quilted using an all over pattern.
